Description
Perched above the Dão river that snakes its way through granite valleys, the Adega de Penalva is one of the leading cooperatives in the area. The group boasts around a thousand member growers, but it’s important to note that the average holding per member amounts to barely over a hectare. From these small plots they craft simple but delicious wines with a real sense of place.
“Deep cherry red. Light cherry aroma, touch of peppery spice, smells fresh rather than sweet. Terrific introduction to Dão – red cherry fruit, a firm but polite grip from the tannins and an immediate association with the granite rock of the region. Avoids the intense perfume of Tourigal National in favour of a sense of place. Both dry and lively. Juicy, fresh and not weighted down by alcohol or oak. Probably made for drinking now but has the constitution to do well in bottle for at least a couple of years. Perfect supper/house red.” by Julia Harding @ jancisrobinson.com
