The Flavours of Maharani Gin

Celebrated as a “fusion of cultures and flavours” Maharani Irish Gin is infused with the fragrant spices of Southern India. Making it a wonderful combination of Irish craftsmanship and Kerala botanicals.  The stunning combination of pomelo fruit, cardamon, cassia and nutmeg give Maharani Irish Gin an aromatic warmth that creates its signature taste.

Distilled In Cork

In the historic Cork city factory of Henry Ford, Rebel City Distillery has created an innovative space for the creation and distilling of modern Irish spirits.  The first distillery to open in the city in more than half a century.

Opened in 2020, the distillery is the brainchild of family business team Robert, Bhagyga and Brendan Barrett.  All of whom combine their unique skills to create innovative, locally-distilled drinks that capture the essence of the region.

Gin – The Comeback Years

Gin has experienced a remarkable resurgence in recent years, with the industry witnessing steady growth globally and locally. From craft distilleries like Rebel City Distillery to established brands, the market has seen an influx of diverse offerings, catering to a wide range of consumer preferences. This growth is attributed to several factors, including evolving consumer tastes, increased experimentation with botanical blends, and the rising popularity of artisanal spirits.

In Ireland, particularly, there has been a notable surge in gin consumption, driven by a burgeoning craft distilling scene and a growing appreciation for locally produced spirits. Consumers are drawn to the versatility of gin, its diverse flavour profiles, and the sense of craftsmanship associated with small-batch production. As a result, gin menus have become a staple in bars, restaurants, and households, reflecting its status as a quintessential spirit of the modern era.

How To Choose The Right Tonic For Your Gin

Choosing a suitable tonic for gin involves considering several factors to complement the gin’s flavour profile and enhance the overall drinking experience.

First we consider the flavour profile, the botanicals and flavour notes of the gin. The tick is to choose a tonic that complements these flavours rather than overpowering them. For example, a citrus-forward gin might pair well with a tonic that has citrus undertones.

Tonic waters vary in sweetness, from dry to sweeter varieties. Matching the sweetness level of the tonic with the gin will achieve the perfect balance. Note that sweeter gins may benefit from a drier tonic, while drier gins might pair well with a slightly sweeter tonic.

Also pay attention to the carbonation level of the tonic. A tonic with higher carbonation can provide a more refreshing and effervescent experience, which may complement certain gins. This is definitely something to keep in mind when making summer drinks and cocktails.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different tonic brands and flavour variations to find the perfect match for your gin. Have fun with friends and host a tonic tasting evening alongside your new favourite Maharani Gin to discover new flavour combinations.

Ultimately, the goal is to find a tonic that enhances the unique characteristics of the gin while creating a balanced and enjoyable cocktail.

Make Your Own Signature Gin Drink

On every gin menu in Cork, you’ll find gins garnished with all kinds of fruits and botanicals. Far from being for show, these added touches bring out the delicious flavours of different gins.

Botanical ingredients such as juniper berries and aromatic herbs for example are used to infuse flavour into gin by adding them directly to the spirit or steeping them in the gin for a period of time to impart their flavours.

On the other hand, a gin garnish such as dehydrated grapefruit slices add a citrusy aroma and a hint of tartness to the drink, enhancing its flavour profile and visual appeal.  Similar to dehydrated grapefruit slices, dehydrated lime slices add a burst of citrus flavour but also acidity, complementing the botanical notes of the gin. Perfect for a flavorful gin like Maharani gin.

For those who prefer their gin drinks a little sweeter, dehydrated orange slices will add a sweet and tangy citrus flavour, balancing out the botanicals and adding complexity to the overall taste. Alternatively, freeze-dried raspberries can be used as a garnish or muddled into gin cocktails to impart a subtle berry flavour and a vibrant colour. They also add a touch of sweetness and tartness to the drink, enhancing fruity notes.
